Coach Bochette: “It was one of the more interesting and difficult run-ups to a game, especially a first game of the year, that I think I’ve ever witnessed.  We’ve had three-to-four everyday starters go down with minor injuries.  It was an interesting leadup to the game and we had a lot of young players thrown into some very important roles against a very big, very athletic, and very good team in Oklahoma.  What the players did tonight was excellent.  We were disciplined, when we had to defend we defended really well, when we had to keep possession we kept possession really well, we created chances, and at times we were the aggressors.  It hurts not getting more out of the game and losing it still but we’re really proud of the effort we put forth tonight.”

The University at Albany women’s soccer team finally made their 2019 season debut late Thursday night after lightning in the area pushed the start of the game against Oklahoma back more than two hours.

In tonight’s first meeting in program history, both teams struggled to find their offense in the first half with the Sooners recording the only two shots of the first 45 minutes.  Despite not taking a shot, UAlbany did draw three corner kicks in the first half and was able to create chances in the attacking third.

Oklahoma broke through early in the second half, with junior midfielder Yuuka Kurosaki finding the back of the net in the 48th minute to take a 1-0 lead.

UAlbany freshman Sahara Zingano recorded the Great Danes’ first shot of the night in the 55th minute, pushing her attempt over the Oklahoma crossbar.  UAlbany’s lone shot on goal came in the 83rd minute from freshman Natasha Fowler-Varon.

UAlbany goalkeeper Andrea Leitner made five saves on the night, including four in the second half.

Up next: UAlbany visits Northeastern on Sunday, August 25 for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
