Savino Named Pitcher of the Week
BOSTON – For the second-straight week, University at Albany senior Dominic Savino has been named America East Pitcher of the Week, the conference offices announced Monday. He was named alongside Player of the Week Ciaran Devenney from UMass Lowell and Rookie of the Week Thomas Babalis from Binghamton.
Savino, a righty from Smithtown, N.Y., pitched 8.0 innings in the series opener against Hartford on Friday, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts. Savino won his fourth-straight start after starting the season 0-4, and in the process extended UAlbany’s winning streak to seven games, before it continued to nine after successfully completing the sweep of the Hawks with victories in the next two games.
Savino finished the regular season leading the America East in opposing batting average (.224), while ranking second in ERA (2.69) and eighth in strikeouts (55). He leads the Great Danes in innings pitched (73.2), strikeouts, and complete games (2).
UAlbany has clinched the two-seed in the America East Tournament, and will enjoy a first-round bye before opening play on Thursday, May 23 against the winner of three-seed Binghamton and six-seed Hartford.
